2017 Mazda CX-5 Gets Four Stars in Crash Tests
CARS.COM — Mazda’s redesigned CX-5 earned four out of five stars overall in crash tests by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. That trails top rivals like the Ford Escape, Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4, which all got five stars overall for the 2017 model year. The development might give pause to safety-minded shoppers.

The SUV scored five stars across all NHTSA frontal tests and most of its side impact evaluations but four stars in the agency’s rollover rating, passenger-side crash test and combined rear-seat rating. (No evaluations were less than four stars.) Scores were identical for front- and all-wheel-drive models.
Asked why the overall score is four stars when most individual components were five, NHTSA issued a statement to Cars.com saying that the overall star rating is “much more complicated” than a straightforward combination of all the individual scores.
“It’s not just a simple average of all the individual ratings,” the agency said in an email. “It’s based on the overall vehicle safety score, which is the combined weighted average of the relative risk scores from the frontal, side and rollover resistance tests.”
The CX-5 earned the top scores in the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s side impact and moderate overlap frontal crash tests, but as of this writing, IIHS has yet to subject the SUV to six other evaluations.
