2016 Ford Shelby F-150 Is Off-Roading Heaven
It's not often that a customized pickup truck at an auto show catches our eye, but the 2016 Ford Shelby F-150 on the floor of the 2016 Chicago Auto Show did just that. To see our video about the truck, click here.
Born from a partnership between Shelby American and Tuscany Motor Co., the half-ton pickup will offer a select group of buyers an extremely capable truck that will stand out wherever it goes, on or off-road. Using the Shelby brand name (made famous by Carroll Shelby's special high-performance Mustangs and GTs) and emblazoned with his famous cobra logo inside and out, this special-edition truck aims to be a balanced combination of muscular style and performance.
Some might remember the Ford F-150 Tonka that Tuscany displayed at the in its iconic yellow glory. That was the first of its Ford offerings (Tuscany offers several GM special editions. Tuscany announced its partnership with Shelby at the 2015 Specialty Equipment Market Association Show.
Some might think the truck is all about looking wild with the bulging hood, extended flares and custom grille, but there are several solid performance upgrades. Buyers can stay with the stock 5.0-liter V-8 with 385 horsepower, or they can check the engine performance box to get close to 700 hp with the addition of a high-output supercharger (and a few other pieces) that costs about $12,000.
This pickup also uses a 3.5-inch suspension lift with Fox Racing shocks to accommodate the 35-inch BFGoodrich All-Terrain KO2 tires. Shelby uses custom beadlock rims to finish off the imposing stance of the truck. The truck is offered in five colors, each with the requisite Shelby double racing stripes down the middle of the truck. To finish off the sleek look, Tuscany includes a hard tonneau cover (also with the racing stripes); a standard bed rug keeps cargo safe from scratches.
Since all Shelby F-150s are based on the Lariat trim level, much of the interior looks familiar (wood grains, chrome accents and soft leather), but Shelby does add a few logos and stitching accents, as well as a limited-edition nameplate on the dash with the build number out of the 500 to be produced.
Pricing for the Shelby package, as you might expect, is steep and can add as much as $40,000 to price of the pickup. The price tag for the Shelby F-150 displayed at the Chicago Auto Show (which has every option available) was just less than $100,000. Not for the faint of heart, but you're likely to get a Ford pickup no one has seen before.
