Because the gull-wing doors of the 2013 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT aren’t exotic enough and 583 horsepower isn’t enough, there’s the 2014 SLS AMG Black Series.
Inspired by the SLS AMG GT3 racecar, the SLS AMG Black Series is the SLS on steroids. It uses the car’s 6.3-liter V-8, boosted to make 622 hp. Mercedes says it’s the most powerful gas-powered AMG model; it has a zero-to-60 time of 3.5 seconds and a top speed of 196 mph.
The coupe weighs 154 pounds less than the SLS AMG thanks to heavy use of lightweight carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic.
Helping to amp up the coupe’s look are flared fenders; enlarged air intakes; tinted headlamps; taillamps with black surrounds; front, rear and side skirts; and a rear diffuser. They match a black high-gloss wing, hood fins and side mirrors.
The 2014 SLS AMG Black Series goes on sale next summer. Prices haven’t been announced, but they’re sure to be as outrageous as the car itself. The 2013 SLS AMG GT hasn’t been priced yet, but we expect it to start just short of $200,000. The 2012 SLS AMG starts at $190,475, including destination.
