2010-2014 Toyota Prius, Prius v: Recall Alert

Vehicles Affected: Approximately 807,000 model-year 2010-14 Toyota Prius hybrids and model-year 2012-14 Prius v hybrids

The Problem: The car may not enter a fail-safe driving mode as intended, which could lead to losing power and a stall.  While power steering and braking would remain operational, a vehicle stall at higher speeds could increase the risk of a crash.

This recall provides a remedy to address a new condition in the cars involved in the previous recalls announced in February 2014 and July 2015. Toyota said the previous recalls did not anticipate this new condition remedied with this recall.

The Fix: Dealers will update the software for all involved vehicles for free.

What Owners Should Do: Toyota did not immediately announce an owner-notification schedule but said it will notify owners once the software update is available. Owners can call the automaker at 800-331-4331, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s vehicle-safety hotline at 888-327-4236 or visit its website to check their vehicle identification number and learn more.
