Volkswagen is recalling nearly 177,500 examples of its Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport SUVs due to a defect that may cause the engine cover to come loose and potentially melt on hot engine surfaces.
Affected vehicles include model-year 2024-25 Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport SUVs. The issue lies with the engine cover, which may have been improperly installed after service; this may allow it to come loose and contact hot engine surfaces, potentially melting the cover. A loose engine cover that melts could increase the risk of a fire.
VW will address the issue by removing the engine cover for free. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed April 18. Those with further questions can contact the automaker at 800-893-5298 (VW’s number for this recall is 10X5), the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s vehicle-safety hotline at 888-327-4236, or visit its website to check their vehicle identification number and learn more.
