After recalling nearly 33,000 Gladiators and Wranglers over a faulty instrument panel display in early September, Stellantis’ Jeep brand is back to kick October off with a recall for more than 154,000 examples of its plug-in-hybrid Wrangler 4xe and Grand Cherokee 4xe SUVs. The culprit this time is a potential fire risk.
Affected vehicles include model-year 2020-24 Wrangler and Wrangler Unlimited 4xes and model-year 2022-24 Grand Cherokee 4xes. A routine data review revealed 13 reported fires, and Jeep estimates that 5% of affected vehicles may have the defect. All vehicles were parked and off when the fires occurred. Jeep says the risk of fire is reduced when the battery is depleted, so it’s advising owners to refrain from recharging and to park away from structures and other vehicles until the remedy is performed.
There’s no remedy at this time, but Jeep will let customers know when it is available. Those with further questions in the meantime can contact parent company Stellantis at 800-853-1403, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s vehicle-safety hotline at 888-327-4236, or visit its website to check your vehicle identification number and learn more.
