GM is issuing a recall for more than 132,000 Chevrolet and GMC heavy-duty pickup trucks over an issue with the tailgate, which may unexpectedly unlatch while the vehicle is in Park.
Affected vehicles include model-year 2024 Chevy Silverado 2500 and 3500 trucks and GMC Sierra 2500 and 3500 trucks with power-unlatching tailgates. Water may enter the tailgates of these vehicles and come into contact with the gate-release switch, possibly causing a short circuit. An unlatched tailgate increases the risk of cargo exiting the vehicle and becoming a road hazard, increasing the risk of a crash.
The automaker is advising owners to check that their tailgate is closed and latched prior to driving. Dealers will replace the exterior touchpad switch assemblies, as necessary, for free. GM will begin notifying owners Jan. 13, 2025, but those with further questions can call Chevrolet at 800-222-1020 or GMC at 800-462-8782 (GM’s number for this recall is N242469160), the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s vehicle-safety hotline at 888-327-4236 or visit its website to check their vehicle identification number and learn more.
