Nearly 120,700 Chevrolet Spark and Spark EV hatchbacks have been issued a new recall from parent company GM over concerns of hood latch corrosion.

The recall affects model-year 2013-15 Sparks and model-year 2014-15 Spark EVs. The issue is with the secondary hood latch, which may corrode at the latch pivot, preventing the hood latch from properly engaging. Such a latch failure can result in the vehicle’s hood opening unexpectedly, increasing the risk of a crash.

As a resolution, dealers will replace the hood striker assembly and hood latch assembly for free. GM will begin notifying owners Oct. 10, with second letters mailed once the fix is available. Until then, those with questions can call Chevrolet at 800-222-1020 (GM’s number for this recall is A222359300), the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s vehicle-safety hotline at 888-327-4236, or visit its website to check your vehicle identification number and learn more.
