10 Biggest News Stories of the Week: Toyota Land Cruiser, Lexus GX Keep Mercedes-Benz C-Class in Tow

In a movie, it might follow two twins separated at birth — one growing up rough and rugged, the other enjoying the finer things of a high-toned upbringing — suddenly thrown back together to compete in a battle of nature versus nurture. In real life, we pitted the beefy, off-road-ready 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser against its well-heeled cousin from Toyota’s luxury brand, the 2024 Lexus GX 550, to determine which was made of tougher stuff for towing — and we chronicled the contest in Cars.com’s most popular news article of the past week.

We put the cross-brand cousins through their towing paces in a standardized evaluation. Spoiler: Despite the Land Cruiser’s rugged rep, its fancier family member triumphed with a combination of a torquier powertrain, more accommodating 10-speed transmission and 51% higher max towing capacity of over 9,000 pounds. The two SUVs may share underlying architecture, but the GX still outperformed the Land Cruiser in nearly every metric, including acceleration, stability and stamina on extended grades. The Land Cruiser did trump the GX 550 in fuel economy, however, using some 20% less gas during the tow examination.
