10 Biggest News Stories of the Week: RAV4 Recall Rolls Over Mazda CX-9 Review

Even in the Toyota RAV4’s more unflattering moments, the best-selling compact crossover continually proves its popularity. Case in point: A federal safety recall of approximately 14,000 model-year 2019 RAV4 and RAV4 Hybrid SUVs — for a defect that could prevent the backup camera from activating, increasing crash risk — tops this week’s list of most-read Cars.com news articles thanks to an audience many thousands larger than the entire number of RAV4s recalled.

On the positive side of that, hopefully anyone who might need to know about this recall will see our report or hear about it from a Cars.com-reading acquaintance. Having to settle for second place amid the RAV4’s reign was our weekly roundup of the top Cars.com expert reviews and videos led by reviewer Mike Hanley’s comprehensive critique of the 2019 Mazda CX-9 SUV. In his review, Hanley noted that what the CX-9 lacks in passenger and cargo space, it attempts to make up for in driving fun compared with competitors like the Honda Pilot, GMC Acadia and Kia Sorento.
“The field has only gotten stronger with the arrival of models such as the [Volkswagen] Atlas and [Kia] Telluride — both of which are worth a test drive — but if you can live with the CX-9’s shortcomings, there’s nothing else in the class that drives like it,” Hanley writes.

Rounding out the top five this week are our Kelsey Mays’ August roundup of the best new-car deals of the month, our comprehensive coverage collection comprising everything a compact-SUV shopper needs to know about the 2019 Honda CR-V, and reviewer Brian Wong’s firsthand account of his up-close-and-personal visit with the so-sexy-you-gotta-see-it-in-the-flesh 2020 Chevrolet Corvette.
