It was a veritable sword-and-sandals epic in a city more known for sun and sand as the 2020 Jeep Gladiator vanquished all other new-model debuts at the 2018 Los Angeles Auto Show. The all-new Jeep pickup truck piqued the interest of enthusiasts and mainstream car consumers alike, taking up three of the top 10 spots (including the No. 1 position by a wide margin) among Cars.com’s most popular articles from the L.A. show, which just ended its 10-day public run on Sunday.

While the crowd roared loudest for the Gladiator at this particular coliseum — not the one where the Rams play, but the Los Angeles Convention Center downtown — the 2019 Honda Passport proved a formidable foe. Honda’s renewed-for-2019 two-row SUV generated enough reader interest to grab both the No. 3 and No. 4 spots among our most read auto-show stories.

While its little surprise that two of the hottest-selling automotive body styles — pickup trucks and SUVs — would dominate the official start of the 2018-19 auto-show season, Mazda came out swinging for the embattled sedan and hatchback. The 2019 Mazda3 reminded us that there’s interest left yet among car shoppers in … well, cars. Rounding out the top five was the 2020 Hyundai Palisade, a named-for-the-neighborhood reimagining of the three-row Santa Fe with would-be coastal cachet and luxe-life aspirations to match.
