What’s the Best Deal on a Mid-Size SUV in February 2020?

In addition to our monthly report on the best new-car deals industrywide, we’re also focusing this month on deals for mid-size SUVs — vehicles for shoppers who want  more space, quality and drivability than what most popular compact SUVs deliver, but not the family-hauling size of big three-row SUVs. Mid-size SUVs tend to cater to couples and small families: Excluding luxury brands, this class includes such sportier two-row SUVs as the Chevrolet Blazer, Ford Edge,  Hyundai Santa Fe, Jeep Grand Cherokee and Nissan Murano, as well as a handful with a small third row, such as the Kia Sorento and Mitsubishi Outlander.

Which of these mid-size SUVs have the biggest discounts off the sticker price in February 2020? From our survey of six major U.S. markets, here are prominent deals we spotted. All deals expire March 2 except for the Ford deals, which expire March 31.

Nissan Murano

Factory cash discounts on the 2020 Nissan Murano amount to some 7-15% off depending on your region and the trim level you want. Nissan is offering from $3,000 cash back to as much as $6,250  on the higher SL or Platinum trim levels. Those higher trim levels account for just over half of new 2020 model-year Murano SUVs on Cars.com as of this writing. Alternately, creditworthy shoppers in some markets can get 0% financing for 36 months through Nissan’s finance unit, plus a $2,250 cash discount on SL or Platinum trim levels.

Kia Sorento

This one is a little complicated, as it varies both by region and the equipment on Kia’s mid-size SUV. The brand is discounting all 2020 Sorentos by some 6-11%.  The offers range from $2,500 off a four-cylinder Sorento (L and LX trim levels) to $3,500 off a Sorento with the available V-6 (S, EX and LX trim levels). Some regions offer an additional $500 off if you opt to add all-wheel drive (a $1,800 option). The lower-level four-cylinder Sorento should be easier to find: Of the 10,475 Sorentos currently listed nationwide on Cars.com, about three-fourths have the four-cylinder engine, and about a third of the four-cylinder examples also have AWD.

Alternately, creditworthy shoppers can get 0% financing for up to 66 months through Kia’s finance unit and — in some regions —  still get a $500 cash discount on a Sorento AWD. Heavy discounts on the 2020 Sorento discounting come because a redesigned 2021 Sorento arrives soon.

Ford Edge

Factory cash discounts on the 2020 Ford Edge amount to some 3-6% off depending on your region and the trim level you want. Ford is offering from $1,250 to $2,000 cash back on the Edge’s lower trim levels, SE and SEL, and $1,750 to $2,500 off the higher ones — Titanium or the high-performance ST.

An honorable mention this month goes to the Mitsubishi Outlander for a $3,000 factory rebate that applies through March 31 to the 2019 models still on dealer lots. There are quite a few — accounting for about a fourth of the new Outlanders listed on Cars.com — but you’ll miss out on the Outlander’s additional standard safety features and revised multimedia system, among other changes, for 2020.
