Car Seats Affected: Approximately 39,000 Combi Coccoro convertible child restraints; only model number 8220 seats manufactured between Jan. 1, 2009 and June 29, 2016 are affected. You can locate your car seat’s model information on a sticker on the bottom of the seat.
The Problem: When used in the forward-facing position and installed with a vehicle’s lap belt, excessive force may be transmitted to the child in a crash, increasing the risk of an injury.
“Combi USA, Inc. recommends always using the vehicle tether anchor, and the use of lower anchor (Latch) belts or the vehicle lap-shoulder (three-point) belts with lock-off, when installing your seat in a forward-facing position,” the manufacturer said in a statement.
The Fix: Combi will provide owners with a free cover to better brace the bottom of the seat.
What Owners Should Do: Combi has already begun notifying owners. Owners can call the manufacturer at 1-888-232-3294, NHTSA’s vehicle-safety hotline at 888-327-4236, or go to www.safercar.gov for more info.
