Following on from its announcement in October 2023 that it would be adopting the North American Charging Standard charge ports across its electric vehicle lineup, Kia has now announced further details on the logistics of adapters for owners of its EV6, EV9 and Niro EV. The big news: If you’ve recently bought or are about to buy one, you’ll receive a free NACS adapter.

The NACS charging port and accompanying plug originated with Tesla (though its regulatory name is SAE J3400), but its adoption by the automotive industry over the past two years has proven nigh conclusive thanks to Tesla’s decision to open up its Supercharger network. That allows vehicles with existing Combined Charging System ports to use Tesla chargers.

Here’s how it works for Kia: Customers who take delivery of a new 2024 or 2025 EV9 or 2024 EV6 from Sept. 4 and later will receive a free adapter from the brand that grants access to more than 16,500 NACS DC fast chargers. Delivery of the adapters is expected in early 2025. EV6, EV9 and Niro EV customers who took delivery prior to Sept. 4 will have the opportunity to purchase an adapter from a Kia dealer at a later date. Access to the DC fast chargers is planned for Jan. 15, 2025.

Additionally, in early 2025, Kia says its EV owners will have access and the ability to pay for charging via the Kia Access app once a vehicle software upgrade is completed. Over-the-air updates may be available for this, though Kia notes model-year 2019-24 Niro EV software updates must be done through a dealer.
