How Do Car Seats Fit in a 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5?
The verdict: The all-new 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 is an electric SUV with a roomy interior that easily accommodated two car seats. Its spacious backseat and sizable cargo area could make it a hit with families.

A Grade
- Rear-facing convertible: The rear convertible fit well in the Ioniq 5 thanks to its 39.4 inches of rear legroom. The Ioniq 5’s rear seats slide forward and back, and for our car-seat installations, we position the rear seat in its most rearward position. The car seat’s thinner, hooklike connectors made connecting to the Ioniq 5’s lower Latch anchors easy.
- Forward-facing convertible: Installing the forward convertible also went smoothly. Connecting to the lower Latch anchors was a snap, and we raised the head restraint and used the sliding rear seats to gain easy access to the top tether anchors on the rear seatbacks. We slid the rear seat forward and connected the tether anchor without having to leave the backseat.
- Booster: To get a better fit with our highback booster seat, we reclined the rear seatback and raised the head restraint to situate the booster’s back flush against the seat cushions. The outer seat belt buckles are on spring-loaded stable stalks. They sit a little low, but kids should be able to grasp them to buckle up independently.
B Grade
- Latch: The Ioniq 5 has two sets of lower Latch anchors in the outer rear seats. The rear seats are well cushioned and the anchors sit just inside the rear seat bight, where the back and bottom seat cushions meet, making it a little challenging to connect to the Ioniq 5’s lower Latch anchors with bulky Latch connectors (like the infant seat’s). The EV has three sets of top tether anchors on the rear seatbacks that are well marked, making it easy for parents to find and use them.
- Infant: We struggled to connect this car seat’s bulkier Latch connectors to the Ioniq 5’s lower Latch anchors; t took five attempts to finally make a connection on just one anchor. There was plenty of space for this rear-facing car seat. We didn’t need to adjust the front passenger seat to accommodate the infant seat.
C Grade
- None
Grading Scale
A: Plenty of room for the car seat and the child; doesn’t impact driver or front-passenger legroom. Easy to find and connect to Latch and tether anchors. No fit issues involving head restraint or seat contouring. Easy access to the third row.
B: One room, fit or connection issue. Some problems accessing the third row when available.
C: Marginal room plus one fit or connection issue. Difficult to access the third row when available.
D: Insufficient room, plus multiple fit or connection issues.
F: Does not fit or is unsafe.

For the Car Seat Check, we use a Chicco KeyFit 30 infant-safety seat, a Graco Contender 65 convertible seat and Graco TurboBooster seat. The front seats are adjusted for a 6-foot driver and a shorter passenger. The three child seats are installed in the second row. The booster seat sits behind the driver’s seat, and the infant and convertible seats are installed behind the front passenger seat.
We also install the forward-facing convertible in the second row’s middle seat with the booster and infant seat in the outboard seats to see if three car seats will fit; a child sitting in the booster seat must be able to reach the seat belt buckle. Parents should also remember that they can use the Latch system or a seat belt to install a car seat, and that Latch anchors have a weight limit of 65 pounds, including the weight of the child and the weight of the seat itself.
