2025 Mazda CX-70: For When You Want a Little Less CX-90

Mazda announced in 2021 that a slew of new SUVs would join its lineup by 2023, and for the new CX-70, it’s better late than never. The 2025 CX-70 is an all-new two-row SUV based on the automaker’s three-row CX-90. And like its larger sibling, the new CX-70 will be available as a plug-in hybrid — Mazda’s second in its lineup.

Styling
If you like the CX-90’s looks, the CX-70 will not disappoint — it looks very similar. The CX-70 shares a platform with the CX-90 and mimics the three-row SUV’s overall look with a low stance, long hood, sculpted body and signature grille. On the CX-70, the grille wears a gloss-black honeycomb treatment. The CX-70 also adds contrasting black accents throughout the exterior, including the roof spoiler, as well as available 21-inch wheels with a black-metal and machine-cut finish.
As with its exterior styling, the CX-70’s cabin design resembles the CX-90’s in its classy design and premium materials, such as contrast gray-metallic inlay trim and available red Nappa leather with red stitching. The CX-70 also features a cargo management system with compartments, hooks for bags and underfloor storage. Mazda said cargo space is “optimized” in the CX-70 but failed to provide specs.
Powertrain Specs and Range








































All versions of the CX-70 feature some form of electrification. Mazda didn’t release full specs, but it did say that two powertrains will be available: a turbocharged 3.3-liter inline-six-cylinder engine with mild-hybrid assist and a plug-in hybrid.
In the CX-90, the mild-hybrid turbocharged 3.3-liter inline-six-cylinder makes 340 horsepower and 369 pounds-feet of torque with recommended premium fuel. The 2024 CX-90 PHEV uses an enhanced version of Mazda’s current 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that’s paired with an electric motor and a 17.8-kilowatt-hour battery; it has a system output of 323 hp and 369 pounds-feet of torque that’s good for 26 miles of all-electric range.
Mazda is late to the electrification game — the automaker’s only all-electric vehicle, the MX-30, was recently discontinued after a brief run in California. The CX-70 marks the automaker’s second PHEV after the CX-90, but it won’t be the last: Mazda said its lineup will be fully electrified by 2030.
Features
Again, Mazda was short on specifics, but it looks like the 2025 CX-70 uses Mazda’s current infotainment system — the tablet-like screen sits high on the dash and is controlled via a console-area knob. The system is not a touchscreen, and in the CX-90, it frustrated multiple editors of ours.
The CX-70 will showcase a couple of features that are new to Mazda, such as remote-folding rear seats and Amazon Alexa integration (new to Mazda SUVs specifically), which allows for voice control of things like changing the temperature or radio station as well as controlling connected smart home devices.
A few new safety features will also make their debut on the CX-70, including the Unresponsive Driver Support system. This is an emergency system that can automatically decelerate and stop the vehicle if it detects the driver is unresponsive to escalating safety alerts. There’s also a new trailer-hitch view function for the rearview monitor to make towing up to 5,000 pounds easier.
Pricing and Availability
Mazda didn’t reveal information on the 2025 CX-70’s pricing or when the SUV will arrive at dealerships. Stay tuned for those details.
