2024 Mitsubishi Outlander Lands IIHS Top Safety Pick Rating
Redesigned for 2022 on the same architecture as the Nissan Rogue, the 2024 Mitsubishi Outlander has much to recommend it. It’s sophisticated, stylish and has now earned the Insurance Institute for Highway’s Safety Top Safety Pick designation.

To earn Top Safety Pick accolades, a vehicle has to earn a good rating in three separate frontal crash tests, as well as an acceptable or good rating in a side impact test. Headlights IIHS deems acceptable or good must be standard, and the vehicle has to at least offer as an option a forward collision warning system that earns an advanced or superior rating in a daytime pedestrian detection test. In earning this honor, the regular Outlander joins its plug-in hybrid counterpart, whose 2023 model was announced as a Top Safety Pick in June.
The agency also bestows a more exclusive award, Top Safety Pick+. The criteria for the award were adjusted for 2023 to demand better occupant protection in the side impact test, as well as equivalent performance in an identical pedestrian detection test performed at night.
After its redesign for the 2022 model year, the Outlander qualified for that year’s Top Safety Pick+ award, but neither the gas-powered model nor the plug-in hybrid has yet been evaluated in the new nighttime pedestrian detection test. It’s possible that both models will qualify for the honor once IIHS conducts additional testing. Suddenly being more certain that your car is safe might not qualify as an over-the-air update, but additional peace of mind would be another improvement to the refreshed Outlander.
