A pair of Toyota hybrid hatchbacks — the 2023 Toyota Prius hybrid and 2O23 Prius Prime plug-in hybrid — have earned the Top Safety Pick+ award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, the agency’s highest designation. A third Toyota model, the 2023 Corolla Cross subcompact SUV, earned the Top Safety Pick award, IIHS’ second-highest honor.
To earn the Top Safety Pick+ award, the Prius and Prius Prime earned good ratings in the driver-side small overlap front, passenger-side small overlap front, updated side and original moderate overlap front crash tests. A vehicle also needs to have acceptable- or good-rated headlights standard on all trims, as well as an available front crash prevention system that earns advanced or superior ratings in both daytime and nighttime vehicle-to-pedestrian tests.
The 2023 Prius and Prius Prime have acceptable-rated LED projector headlights on all trims, and both vehicles have a standard front crash prevention system that earned superior ratings in both the daytime and nighttime tests. According to IIHS, the prior models failed to qualify for the higher designation because they earned just an acceptable rating in the passenger-side small overlap front crash test.
Meanwhile, the Corolla Cross SUV, which is available in gas-powered and hybrid versions, failed to garner the Top Safety Pick+ award because it earned just an acceptable rating in the side test, which has been recently updated and is tougher to ace.
