The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety announced today that three small Toyota SUVs earned top safety awards. The 2022 RAV4 gets the lesser Top Safety Pick designation (but only when equipped with specific headlights), while the 2022 Corolla Cross and RAV4 Prime were each named a Top Safety Pick Plus, the agency’s highest distinction.
To be named either a Top Safety Pick or Top Safety Pick Plus, a vehicle must earn a good rating in six IIHS crashworthiness tests: driver-side small overlap front, passenger-side small overlap front, moderate overlap front, original side, roof strength and head restraint tests. It must also have an available front crash prevention system that earns either an advanced or superior rating in both vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-pedestrian crash-avoidance tests.
Top Safety Pick designees must also have at least one set of available headlights that earn either a good or acceptable rating. The RAV4 LE’s headlights earned a marginal rating, but every other trim’s headlights received good ratings.
A Top Safety Pick Plus designee, like both the Corolla Cross and RAV4 Prime, must have good- or acceptable-rated headlights for every trim level.
In the compact SUV class, the 2022 RAV4’s main rival, the Honda CR-V, also earned the Top Safety Pick designation, as did the Ford Escape. Other compact SUV competitors such as the Hyundai Tucson, Mazda CX-5 and Nissan Rogue earned Top Safety Pick Plus awards.
