When Mitsubishi debuted its redesigned 2022 Outlander in February, we noted that the automaker gave the new SUV more of a lot of things — space, tech, style — so it’s surprising that the SUV only got a little more expensive. The new Outlander starts at $26,990, including destination — $900 more than the outgoing model-year 2020 Outlander (the Outlander PHEV plug-in hybrid had a 2021 model year, but the gas-only model skipped it).

The base price is for the ES trim with front-wheel drive. Standards include a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine making 181 horsepower and 181 pounds-feet of torque, an 8-inch touchscreen multimedia display with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, front USB ports and a host of safety features: forward collision warning, blind spot warning and rear automatic emergency braking.

Four trim levels are available: ES, SE and SEL. Available add-ons are a Convenience Package for ES models, a Tech Package for SE models, a special Launch Edition model on SE and SEL versions, and a Touring Package on the SEL. All-wheel drive is an additional $1,800 across the lineup.

Extra available convenience goodies include wireless phone charging, wireless Apple CarPlay (but wired Android Auto), a 10-speaker Bose premium audio system, panoramic sunroof, 10.8-inch head-up display and 9-inch touchscreen in place of the 8-inch unit.

Additional safety features include Mi-Pilot Assist, Mitsubishi’s integrated safety system that brings adaptive cruise control and lane-centering steering in a package that also incorporates the ability to adjust speed based on traffic sign recognition and information from the navigation system (when equipped). Stop-and-go traffic assist is also part of that package.

The 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander competes against other compact SUVs, such as the Chevrolet Equinox, Ford Escape and Honda CR-V. Against those rivals, it’s priced slightly higher than the Escape and CR-V; it’s also around $2,000 more than a base Equinox. The new Outlander goes on sale in April.
