2019 Volvo XC40 Review: Photo Gallery

CARS.COM — “What if we take a good thing and make it … smaller?” seems to be a leading strategy at Volvo. The redesigned 2018 XC60 is, broadly, a smaller XC90 (our 2016 Best of the Year). Now Volvo has revealed the all-new XC40, the first compact SUV in the brand’s history.

Outside, the XC40 features a front-end in line with Volvo’s design language, including “Thor’s Hammer” headlights and a grille that wouldn’t look out of place on any of its larger and more expensive siblings. A “floating roof” is supported by a large trapezoidal C-pillar. Behind those pillars are proportionally large L-shaped taillights. The passenger doors are sculpted, and there’s plastic cladding that runs from behind the front wheels to the rear bumper to provide a suggestion of off-road capability. (It’s the thought that counts.)
Inside, you’ll find an interior including a fold-out hook for small bags, built-in trash can, tissue-box holder and dedicated inductive charging spaces for smartphones. You can learn more about these innovative features here. The infotainment system and safety features that first appeared in the XC90 have trickled down to the XC40, as well. Interior photos also include Harman Kardon-branded speakers, but there’s no indication if that’s the standard stereo or a premium one, nor is there any indication that Volvo will be using Bowers & Wilkins for an optional stereo in the XC40 as it does in upper trims of the XC60 and XC90.
The XC40 hits dealerships early next year. In the meantime, check out the photo gallery above.
