CARS.COM — Amid swirling rumors about the redesigned 2018 Accord, Honda finally tipped its hat on a few details. The 10th-generation Accord will have a “more aggressive stance and proportion” than any generation that preceded it, Honda promised today. Honda also will play the same card as numerous Accord competitors and ditch the prior V-6 engine — something the Accord has offered since 1995 — for a turbocharged four-cylinder. In fact, all non-hybrid Accords will be turbocharged, Honda said.

The Accord will come with a 1.5-liter or 2.0-liter four-cylinder, both direct-injected and turbocharged. The turbo 1.5-liter pairs with a continuously variable automatic transmission, while the turbo 2.0-liter gets the industry’s first 10-speed automatic in a front-wheel-drive passenger car, Honda said. You can also get both engines with a six-speed manual, an allowance that’s sure to keep the Accord’s credibility high among driving enthusiasts.

Honda didn’t give any power or mileage figures, but it promised this would be the most fun-to-drive and fuel-efficient Accord ever. Look to the Civic for clues, as Honda’s popular compact offers both turbo engines. The 1.5-liter makes 174 to 205 horsepower and 167 to 192 pounds-feet of torque, depending on version. The 2.0-liter makes 306 hp and 295 pounds-feet of torque in its sole application, the new Civic Type R. Honda spokeswoman Jessica Pawl confirmed both engines are shared with the 2018 Accord, but they’re “engineered specifically for their application” here; expect slightly different outputs.

An Accord Hybrid also will return; Honda said it will have the next generation of its two-motor hybrid system. Honda promised a “fall 2017 launch” of the 2018 Accord and will release more details in the weeks to come, so stay tuned.
