The 2016 Nissan Titan XD will be an interesting addition to the full-size pickup truck market, but after recently spending some time in the vehicle towing, hauling and off-roading, we’re struck by how much good work the Nissan engineers have done.

The 2016 Nissan Titan XD is the most significant redesign we’ve ever seen when comparing a new pickup to an old pickup. Nissan hasn’t thought of everything here, but there is plenty to like about the XD.

Even though we don’t have all the details about the XD — we’re told pricing is still a few weeks away — we thought we’d share important details about what we do know.

Max Towing Capacities

The first Titan XDs to arrive will be Cummins-equipped crew-cab models, likely in the higher (and more profitable) trim packages. Interestingly, these trucks will have identical fifth-wheel and conventional bumper-pull max trailer capacities when properly equipped. Here’s how max towing breaks down by trim level.

  • S: 4×2 will have a max-tow rating of 12,314 pounds; 4×4,12,038 pounds
  • SV: 4×2, 12, 164 pounds; 4×4, 11,888 pounds
  • PRO-4X: 11,784 pounds (only offered in 4×4)
  • SL: 4×2, 11,915 pounds; 4×4, 11,638 pounds
  • Platinum Reserve: 4×2, 11,836, 4×4, 10,608 pounds

Gross Vehicle Weight Ratings

All Titan XD trim levels will be classified by the government as heavy-duty trucks (meaning they have a GVWR more than 8,500 pounds) and will not be required to list their fuel economy numbers on the window sticker. Although not confirmed, we fully expect the light-duty Titan due out later next year to offer a GVWR less than 8,500 pounds, so it will have EPA fuel economy ratings for both gas engines. For now, here at the exact GVWR numbers for the crew-cab Cummins Titan XD trim levels.

  • All 4×2 S, SV and SL trims: 8,800 pounds
  • All 4×4 S, SV and SL trims: 8,990 pounds
  • The PRO-4X (4×4 only): 8,990 pounds
  • Platinum Reserve Titan: 4×2, 8,880 pounds; 4×4, 8,950 pounds

Curb Weight

As you might expect, this is a heavy pickup. Typically, factory curb weights in press release materials are on the light side because they don’t include the things optioned on a real-world vehicle. With that said, here are Nissan-provided truck weights listed by trim level. All the trucks listed below are crew cabs with the Cummins V-8. For what it’s worth, we did weigh a Titan XD SL 4×2 at a local truck scale, and it was just 110 pounds heavier than what is listed here.

  • S: 4×2, 6,709 pounds; 4×4, 6,986 pounds
  • SV: 4×2, 6,876 pounds; 4×4, 7,152 pounds
  • PRO-4X: 4×4 only, 7,257 pounds
  • SL: 4×2, 7,126 pounds; 4×4, 7,402 pounds
  • Platinum Reserve: 4×2, 7,204 pounds; 4×4, 7,480 pounds

Payload Capacity

Nissan has done a nice job creating a strong frame that provides enough payload capacity to handle the many J2807 towing requirements. Here are the factory-listed payload ratings for the Titan XD by trim level. All the trucks listed below are crew cabs with the Cummins V-8.

  • S: 4×2, 2,091 pounds; 4×4, 2,004 pounds
  • SV: 4×2, 1,924 pounds; 4×4, 1,838 pounds
  • PRO-4X: 4×4 only, 1,733 pounds
  • SL: 4×2, 1,674 pounds; 4×4, 1,588 pounds
  • Platinum Reserve: 4×2, 1,676 pounds; 4×4, 1,470 pounds

Pricing

We don’t have specific pricing yet, but we do have ballpark numbers for the Titan XD crew cab with the all-new Cummins 5.0-liter V-8. The XD’s S trim will start at just less than $40,000 for a 4×2 Cummins; the PRO-4X 4×4 Cummins will start at around $50,000, and the fully loaded Platinum Reserve will start at around $60,000, depending on how many options you choose. Destination charges will add another $1,200. This puts the new 2016 Titan XD right in the middle of the well-appointed half-ton models while providing a huge value proposition when compared to the bigger and beefier three-quarter-ton models. More details to come.
