Expert 2005 Mazda MazdaSpeed Miata MX-5 review

Vehicle Overview
Mazda is the automaker most responsible for the sports-car revolution of the 1990s, and the MX-5 Miata continues to provide driving entertainment at a moderate price. For 2005, Mazda’s rear-wheel-drive two-seat sports car remains available in base and LS trim levels, and a six-speed-manual transmission can be installed.

Performance-minded roadster fans now have a stronger choice, though. During the 2004 model year, Mazda introduced a high-performance Mazdaspeed MX-5 Miata with a turbocharged engine that generates 178 horsepower rather than the usual 142 hp. Offered only with a six-speed-manual transmission, the Mazdaspeed model rides on 17-inch tires and has a body that’s been lowered by 7 millimeters.

The company says more than 1,000 parts were modified to create the Mazdaspeed MX-5 Miata. A Bosch torque-sensing limited-slip differential is installed.

A new Grand Touring edition of the Mazdaspeed MX-5 Miata arrived for the 2005 model year and features leather upholstery rather than the cloth seating of the base model. Mazdaspeed is the in-house performance arm of Mazda.

Exterior
The Mazdaspeed MX-5 Miata exhibits an amalgamation of curves that are offset by few straight lines. The manual-folding fabric top has a glass back window with a defogger. A wind-blocker panel is included.

The sport-tuned fully independent suspension in the Mazdaspeed MX-5 Miata includes shorter springs with increased rates, larger front and rear stabilizer bars, and Mazdaspeed-tuned Bilstein shock absorbers. A rear-deck spoiler, an under-spoiler and a large exhaust tip are standard. Fog lamps are recessed into the front under-spoiler. A $1,500 detachable hardtop is optional.

Interior
Cloth bucket seats are used in the regular Mazdaspeed MX-5 Miata, while leather upholstery is installed in the Grand Touring edition. A black vinyl top is standard, and a black cloth roof is available on the Grand Touring model. Because the car is only 4 feet tall, occupants have to drop down into the seats. The driver faces a simple dashboard, and all the controls and gauges are within easy reach. Standard equipment includes a 225-watt Bose six-speaker AM/FM radio with an in-dash six-CD changer. Sirius Satellite Radio can be installed.

Under the Hood
Beneath the Mazdaspeed MX-5 Miata’s hood sits a turbocharged 1.8-liter four-cylinder that produces 178 hp at 6,000 rpm and 166 pounds-feet of torque at 4,500 rpm. The engine teams with a six-speed-manual transmission.

Safety
All-disc antilock brakes are standard. Second-generation front airbags include a key-operated deactivation switch for the passenger side.

  • Love it! Safety, body style, hard top convertible

I love the way the hard top convertible tucks away so quickly and discreetly. The safety features of the car are awesome. The only thing I would consider is making it a little more comfortable for people that have long legs so they can sit in it comfortably without putting their knees to their ears. It was a 2019 so you need to update the year selection in the dropdown screen of this page.

  • MY 2ND MIATA

First mistake was buying it from a small lot. If you're going to buy a used Miata, make sure you do so from a "private seller"! My 1997 was a dream & sometimes sorry I sold her. But the 2005, just another car.

  • Perfectly quick

The car is just the right amount of speed and fun with the turbocharged engine. Gearing is slightly low, so first gear passes quick. Handling is precise and on point.

  • Great weekend warrior

After more than 4 years of ownership, this is by far the best looking MX-5 as well as the best performing. Minor upgrades make this car a blast to drive and get some good power out of the factory turbo with great reliability to boot. Handles like its on rails but that performance comes at the cost of comfort, not that you'll be thinking about it very much. Great car!

  • Zoom, Zoom!

I don't know why Mazdaspeed only modified the Mazda MX-5 Miata for two years, but I think they should reconsider and modify the newer models as well. This little bugger is a blast to drive, and the Mazdaspeed styling and performance sets it apart from the standard MX-5's. Grab one if you can find one, especially one in stock condition. You'll love it!

  • Fantastic Roadster

I have a 2005 MX-5 Mazdaspeed GT in Mica Lava Orange. One of only 1423 made in 2005. This car has amazing handling, torque sensing limited slip dif, double-wishbones, double overhead cam, and is really the perfect roadster. I have driven many roadsters and (except for the Ferrari) this is the best handling roadster I have ever experience...even compared to the Lotus - but much more comfortable as a daily driver. You feel like you are part of the road. it is plenty quick - but for another 1 to 3K you can increase the Horsepower significantly - fast or faster than a Porsche Cayman S or Boxter S. This car just looks different than any other Miata with sleek aggressive styling and a powerful Bose Stereo System. More than 1000 modifications were made by the racing division at Mazda and it shows. Great...no frills roadster - the way they were meant to be.

Simply one insanely fun car. In stock form its a blast to drive, start modding this thing and its true potential becomes unlocked. By far the most fun of the 13 cars (so far) I have ever owned, she's a keeper!
