Vehicle Overview

This off-roader emphasizes rock-crawling over highway comfort, and when it comes to hard-core trailblazing, it's rarely matched. Body styles include the two-door Wrangler and four-door Wrangler Unlimited, and both come in five trim levels: Sport, Sahara, Islander, Mountain and Rubicon. Competitors include the Nissan Xterra and Toyota FJ Cruiser. The Wrangler was redesigned for 2007.

New for 2011
A new body-colored, removable hardtop is available on Sahara models, replacing a black top that was offered previously. Most other changes are inside, where there is a redesigned instrument panel with a new center stack that places stereo controls at the top. A new USB interface connects to thumb drives and MP3 players, and the Media Center now includes streaming Bluetooth audio.

An available three-panel hardtop has removable sections above the driver, front passenger and rear passengers. The hardtop is body-colored on Sahara models, black on others. The standard soft-top was redesigned for 2010 to be removed more easily, according to Jeep. The side doors, available as full or half-size, are removable, and the windshield can be folded down. Exterior features include:

  • Standard 16-inch steel wheels
  • Optional 17-inch aluminum-alloy wheels
  • Optional 18-inch aluminum-alloy wheels
  • Standard removable doors
  • Standard fold-down windshield
  • Standard full-size matching spare tire mounted on rear gate

The vertical center stack of the instrument panel has a new look but the same layout as before, with a high-mounted radio, circular air vents underneath and climate controls below. New available steering-wheel controls operate the radio, cruise control and hands-free phone. The Wrangler and Wrangler Unlimited feature a floor-length console with front and rear cupholders, plus locking storage. Interior features include:

  • Available cloth or two-tone leather seating
  • Standard six-speaker sound system with radio, CD player and MP3 jack
  • New, optional 110-volt electrical outlet
  • Optional air conditioning
  • Optional cruise control
  • Optional power windows and locks
  • Optional upgraded sound system
  • Optional navigation system

Under the Hood
A 3.8-liter V-6 is the sole engine for the two-door Wrangler. The Unlimited gets its own 3.8-liter V-6 with slightly more horsepower and torque. Off-road mainstays include a non-independent suspension (solid front and rear axles) and a part-time four-wheel-drive system with available dual locking differentials.

Other features include underbody skid plates, an available tow package and an available electronically disconnecting front stabilizer bar for increased ground clearance. The Wrangler Sport uses a standard four-wheel-drive system incorporating a two-speed transfer case for part-time use. Mechanical features include:

  • 202-horsepower, 3.8-liter V-6 with 237 pounds-feet of torque
  • Available part-time or full-time four-wheel drive
  • Two-wheel-drive Unlimited versions available
  • Standard six-speed manual transmission
  • Optional four-speed automatic transmission (standard on two-wheel-drive Wrangler Unlimited)
  • Standard four-wheel-disc brakes with vented front and solid rear discs

The Wrangler and Wrangler Unlimited have a standard electronic stability system with Chrysler's rollover mitigation technology, which can pulse individual brakes in an attempt to prevent impending rollovers. Side-impact airbags are optional for the front seats. Side curtain airbags aren't offered. Standard safety features include:

  • Front airbags, optional side-impact airbags
  • Electronic stability control with rollover mitigation
  • Brake assist
  • Smart key that immobilizes the engine in a theft attempt
  • All-speed traction control
  • Antilock braking system with on- and off-road calibrations
