When it comes to choosing a sports sedan, Chrysler isn’t the first brand to come to mind.

The often overlooked Chrysler 300M was added to Chrysler’s large-car LH platform in 1999 as a sporty sedan, shorter than its siblings. Its name comes from Chrysler’s performance-oriented letter-series cars produced from 1955 through 1965. Its shorter length was part of Chrysler’s plans to export the car to Europe.

The 300M hasn’t seen the kind of success overseas that Chrysler originally envisioned, but it’s a terrific choice for the enthusiast seeking a fun set of wheels from an American nameplate.

Its sportiness is reinforced by the addition of a new 300M Special model.

What makes the 300M Special, special?

The 3.5-liter 24-valve V-6 increases horsepower by 5 and torque by 7, for a total of 255 horsepower and 257 foot-pounds of torque. It’s mated to Chrysler’s 4-speed AutoStick automatic with manual shift capabilities.

Chrysler adds a dual exhaust and truly large 18-inch uni-directional tires. Ride height is lowered by an inch and ground effects are added to the body trim. The suspension is stiffened, braking performance is improved and steering feel has been enhanced. Anti-lock disc brakes and high-intensity discharge headlamps round out this impressive package.

Performance is improved somewhat over a standard 300M. The grip is tenacious and steering is relatively quick, with good feel. Power and braking are linear, allowing for more fun than you’d ever expect from a large Chrysler. Tackling twisting roads is actually fun. In fact, it’s more so than the Lexus ES 300 I drove the week before.

It all adds up to a surprisingly adept car.

Inside, an Infinity stereo system, leather seats and faux carbon fiber trim lend the interior a special feel.

The seats are surprisingly comfortable, blending outstanding support and comfort over long distances. The center stack, which features automatic climate control and an excellent sounding AM/FM/cassette/4-CD audio system, is standard Chrysler fare. The stereo is so powerful, it makes the mirror vibrate.

Other niceties include a new tire pressure monitoring system, in addition to small items, such as headlamps that go on automatically with the windshield wipers. Heated seats with 2-position memory function add a luxurious touch.

There’s ample room for four people, five if they’re friendly. Leg and head room are quite good, although the Chrysler 300M sits very low.

Trunk room is plentiful

The 300M is a large car and returned mileage typical of the breed — 18.3 mpg on regular gas.

The 300M Special is indeed special. It’s that rare, large, domestic sedan that’s fun to drive.

Of course, this is just the beginning for the 300M. According to industry trade publication Automotive News, the 300M will change for 2004, switching to a new rear-wheel-drive pl atform and a V-8 engine that will share some components with Mercedes Benz E-Class.

In the meantime, you’ll want to take the wheel of the 300M Special for a ride that’s truly, — um — special.

  • Great value, great style

I've owned this car for nearly three years as a work car, for long-distance trips, and for other basic needs. The exterior style still looks sharp almost 20 years later and Chrysler did a great job designing this car both inside and out. Besides the transmission needing a rebuild at 114k, the car has been reliable, especially in the cold winter months here in MN. The 3.5 HO engine has plenty of horsepower for the size of the car and can pass with ease. Seats are extremely comfortable with plenty of leg-room, cushion, and back support for long drives. Passengers have always complimented the car on its spaciousness and comfort in the rear cabin. The "Special" trim lowers the vehicle with an added body kit, and bigger tires/rims, and can make it difficult for some to enter and exit. Another issue with the lowered clearance I've had is scraping the bumper over driveways and other entrances that most other cars would have no problem with. Overall, I'm happy I purchased this car and think it's a great value for anyone looking for a low price, reliable, and comfortable form of transportation.

  • The fourth Chrysler 300M we've owned, a great car!

The car is all we could ask for, great power, great ride, good mileage, and looks great. We've bought 2 300M's with very low mileage, and probably saved $25,000.00 per car over new car prices. Our last car had 16,787 miles when we bought and this most recent one only had 14,925 miles on it when we bought it.

  • Eh...

This was my first car that ive owned. I bought it used with about 120,000 miles on it, which is a lot. However, I was expecting it to last me longer than a year and a half. Within the first month the transmission busted on me and I got it replaced with no charge. Then it would have issues with starting and the problem was the battery. The battery is placed in the most horrible place and it is extremely hard to get to. If you have one and need to replace the battery, look it up on youtube. The beginning of this year the transmission went out on me for the second time so I gave up on the car and moved on to another. It was a fun ride and great car other than that. If you need a used first car I would recommend but don't think your gonna get much life out of it.

  • I wish it was like my old one

Vehicle needed brakes and rotors. Also the exhaust had a leak in it. My original 300M Special I loved it. I wish that I didn't have to let it go.

  • The Special IS

First let me say that I bought a 300M Special. Which is a different car than the regular 300M in many ways. A higher output engine, Z-rated high performanse tires, dual exhaust, autostick transmission, and a much better grade of leather then Chrysler usually uses are just some of the differences. When my mechanic was replacing the front end suspension components, he was stunned by the size of the sway bar on this car, saying he'd only ever seen one that big on a Mustang Cobra. And most of the Specials ever built were exported to Europe to kick the snot out of bmw and audi. Only 8,000 a year were vailable in the States. And all of these things show when you own one. Fast, smooth, luxurious, and handles like no other American car from the last decade. At 13 years old it still turns heads in parking lots and garages. I recently averaged 28.1 mpg on a drive from Louisville to St Louis at an average speed of around 78 mph. If you can find one, buy it. You'll never look back.

  • Mama made an ECELLENT choice!

This car was bought brand new off the lot. I advised against the car originally I wanted my mother in a little bigger behicle. She died in 2006 and Im an only child so the car went to me. This car has NEVER been in the shop, great car, sporty I love the look of the car. Chrysler made a fine vehicle when they put these out! Of course this car has been well taken car of too oil changed regular, tires rotated, tune ups and garage kept. I would definately recommend this car!

  • 2002 300M nice ride

2002 Chrysler 300M driven for six years. Minor transmission problem otherwise only brakes & tires replaced. Overall mileage 20.5 mpg up to 28 mpg highway. Comfortable ride, decent handling, many features that worked until traded in. Surprisingly good trade in amount. Still good car at over ten years old and 130,000 miles.

  • Favorite Car... Chrysler 300M

I bought this car with 25K miles on it in 2004. Last year I had 225K miles. Just got the engine rebuilt on it and plan on keeping it for another 200K miles. People, this is a sharp car. It gives me a feeling of being pampered when I ride in it and has been so much fun to drive. You can buy such luxury for the money today.
